Understand the job the tool must do
Tool design starts with the component or process it supports. Loading, temperature, material flow, access and changeover all influence a useful solution. Existing tooling and sample parts can help explain a problem that is difficult to capture in a drawing alone.
Consider manufacture and maintenance together
Insert strategy, datum control and access for replacement parts should be considered during design. Review material and heat-treatment requirements with the relevant specialists before manufacture, and document the agreed scope of any subcontract processes.
Plan the trial and handover
Define what a successful tool trial needs to demonstrate. The handover can then be organised around approved drawings, replacement-part information and an agreed maintenance approach. Any validation or production approval remains specific to the application.
